If you’re adding horsepower under the hood of your Camaro or Corvette then you need to update your transmission with a high-performance clutch.
Any performance driver knows that an aftermarket clutch doesn’t come close to the OEM when running at the track or pushing the limits on the highway.
What are the three stages of aftermarket clutches?
1. This is the most basic clutch upgrade. Stage 1 clutches are designed for mild upgrades, but they are more durable and give a higher torque capacity than the factory clutch. These stage 1 clutches are typically made of an organic material.
2. If you plan to hit the track, then you should consider a Stage 2 clutch for more significant upgrades.Stage 2 clutches feature a kevlar disc with steel backing, and are ideal for occasional track time.
3. Yeah, we know there are those out there going from mild to wild and coming up with tons of crazy ways to add more power. If that’s you, get a Stage 3 performance clutch.
If your goal is to achieve over 600 ft-lbs of torque, you will need to replace your OEM clutch with a high-performance one that can handle the increased power output. Phastek offers a Stage 3 Spec Clutch for the race car drivers out there. Pro tip: We suggest replacing the clutch before adding tons of power.
What is the advantage of a good clutch?
Besides adding some power, what are other things to consider when upgrading your clutch?
1. Material. You mostly will decide between organic and ceramic. An organic clutch is made from a mixture of materials and commonly used in the factory clutch. If you’re doing a lot of daily driving than this is probably what you want to go with. Ceramic clutches handle much higher-performance and torque levels.
The are more durable and resistant to wear and heat. Ceramic clutches also make more noise and have harsh engagement. If you’re planning to add a supercharger, go with the ceramic clutch.
2. Friction Rating. The friction rating indicates how much grip the clutch has. A high friction rating means a stronger clutch, and that it can handle more power.
3. Driving Style. We all like to drive cars like we’re Jeff Gordon in a Pepsi Max commercial from 2013.
But if you’re hitting the highway, driving your vehicle that enthusastically everyday, then you should consider a clutch upgrade to at least a Stage 1.
If you plan track days, then you want to look at a Stage 2 Clutch. But if you’re actually putting together a build that you hope puts you on par with Jeff Gordon, then go with a Stage 3 clutch.
